According to local media, Nigerian police rescued six pregnant women after raiding a suspected “baby factory” in Rivers state.

The alleged owner of the child trafficking residence, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested, according to police.

They claimed she confessed to the crime and had been involved in human trafficking for a long time.

“The prime suspect and her accomplice are currently in custody, and further investigation is underway for the possible arrest of other suspects in connection with the crime,” said Polycarp Emeka, the state commissioner of police, on Wednesday.

In Nigeria, stories of so-called “baby factories” abound, in which women are abducted with the intention of getting them pregnant and selling the babies.

In 2019, Nigerian police released 19 pregnant women from properties described as “baby factories” in Lagos.

More than 160 children were rescued from two unlicensed orphanages in the city a year ago.
