Spanish Football Federation President Faces Legal Action Amid Controversial Kiss.

The Spanish secretary of sport has expressed a desire for a “MeToo moment” within Spanish football as the government initiates legal proceedings to suspend Luis Rubiales, the president of the football federation. This action comes in response to Rubiales kissing World Cup star Jenni Hermoso on the lips, an incident that has stirred considerable debate and criticism.

Despite intense pressure, Rubiales has chosen not to step down from his position following the incident, which occurred after Spain’s Women’s World Cup final victory over England. FIFA has also taken note of the situation and launched disciplinary proceedings against the 46-year-old former player.

The Me Too movement, which seeks to combat violence against women, gained prominence in 2017 following allegations of sexual offenses against film producer Harvey Weinstein. This movement has influenced many sectors, including sports, to address issues related to gender-based misconduct.

Secretary of sport and head of the National Sports Council, Victor Francos, stated, “The government starts today the procedure so that Mr. Rubiales has to give explanations before the Sport Court and if the Sport Court agrees, I can announce that we will suspend Mr. Rubiales from his functions.”

The Spanish sports council’s ability to suspend Rubiales hinges on whether the court deems the kiss to be in violation of the professional sports code. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about gender dynamics and acceptable behavior within sports leadership.

While Rubiales apologized for the kiss earlier in the week, his subsequent decision to remain in his role prompted him to publicly apologize once more, this time for his behavior during a separate celebration.

Various players, clubs, and organizations in Spain have spoken out against Rubiales, emphasizing that such actions are not reflective of the values and attitudes they expect from leadership figures in the sport. Among those condemning the incident are prominent football clubs, including Barcelona, Sevilla, Espanyol, and Racing Santander.

This incident highlights the ongoing importance of addressing issues related to gender equality and respect within the realm of sports and society as a whole.
