A cholera outbreak has killed at least ten people in Gauteng, South Africa’s most populous province, according to health officials.
Since last Monday, at least 95 people in Hammanskraal, a suburb north of Pretoria, have visited hospitals with cholera symptoms.
The Gauteng health department said in a statement on Sunday that lab tests confirmed at least 19 cases of cholera.
It went on to say that 37 people were admitted in critical condition.
A three-year-old child and nine adults were among those killed.
The provincial head of health, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has urged the public to take extra precautions and practice proper hand hygiene.
The city of Tshwane has issued a warning to residents of Hammanskraal and surrounding areas not to drink water from their taps and has provided water tankers.
