On Tuesday, a congressional subcommittee demanded that the US conduct an immediate review. National Archives after agency employees admitted they were unsure if all of Donald Trump’s presidential records had been handed over.
In addition, Republican former president George W. Bush’s written certification that he has turned over all presidential records and classified materials was requested by Carolyn Maloney, chairwoman of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, to the Archives, the federal agency in charge of maintaining government records.
Democratic lawmaker Maloney also wants him to attest that he hasn’t copied or moved them anywhere besides that organization or the Justice Department.
Trump is under criminal investigation by the Justice Department for keeping government documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after he left office in January 2021, including some that were tagged as “top secret.”
The department is also looking into any potential obstruction of the investigation.
On Monday, Trump’s attorneys also informed Cannon that they disagreed with the government’s proposal for two retired judges, Barbara Jones and Thomas Griffith, to act as special masters. The Trump campaign has suggested former Florida deputy attorney general Paul Huck and federal judge Raymond Dearie.
The department stated in its own filing that it could support Dearie’s nomination but not Huck’s. It stated that Dearie, the other two candidates, and Huck did not appear to have the same level of “significant” expertise preside over federal criminal and civil matters, especially issues involving national security.
