Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey is set to feature against Tottenham Hotspur in Tuesday’s Champions League clash, just a day before he is scheduled to appear in court over serious allegations.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international was charged in August with multiple counts of rape involving two women, as well as sexual assault against a third. The incidents are alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, during his time at Arsenal. Partey has denied all claims.
His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has said he is eager to use the court process to clear his name. After being released on conditional bail in August, Partey signed with Villarreal only two days later. The Spanish club, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, now begin their Champions League campaign against Spurs—ironically, the fiercest rivals of his former side, Arsenal.
Head coach Marcelino expressed full confidence in his player, insisting that Partey remains focused and prepared.
“I am totally convinced that he is mentally and technically ready for tomorrow,” Marcelino told reporters. “We are very happy to have him, not only for his football ability but also for his presence as a person. He brings experience, quality, and leadership.”
When asked about possible hostility from Tottenham supporters, Marcelino chose to focus strictly on the sport.
“We’re talking about a player who may very well be innocent,” he said. “The important thing tomorrow is football. That’s what we’re here for.”
Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020, making 167 appearances and scoring nine goals before moving to Villarreal. Since joining the Spanish side, he has already featured four times this season, including a start.
