Tinubu Sends Condolences to Ghana Over Tragic Helicopter Crash
President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to Ghana’s President, John Mahama, and the people of Ghana following the devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several top officials.
Among those lost in the tragic incident were Ghana’s Defence Minister, Edward Boamah; Environment Minister, Ibrahim Muhammed; and six others, including prominent figures in the country’s political and security landscape.
In a message delivered by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with Ghana in this moment of sorrow. He assured President Mahama that Nigerians stand with their West African neighbours, offering both sympathy and support.
He encouraged the people of Ghana and the families of the deceased to find comfort in knowing that their loved ones died serving their country with dedication and courage. Tinubu also offered prayers for the souls of the departed and strength for those left behind to carry on.
According to reports from Ghana’s military, the helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, lost contact with air traffic control earlier on Wednesday. Shortly after, news emerged of a crash in a dense forested area.
Local television aired footage from the crash site, showing the wreckage still smouldering among the trees. The victims included Muniru Mohammed, a top national security official and former agriculture minister, and Samuel Sarpong, a senior member of the National Democratic Congress.
Boamah had only recently been appointed as Defence Minister, following Mahama’s inauguration in January. Muhammed served in the Environment, Science, and Technology portfolio. The helicopter was reportedly en route to an event focused on tackling illegal mining — one of Ghana’s pressing environmental challenges.
