After 32 of its players emigrated to Europe, a Tunisian football club suspended its activities.

Jamil Meftahi, president of the fourth-division Ghardimaou club, said his players had left either by sea or to Serbia before illegally crossing the border to other European countries.

Until last November, Tunisians did not require a visa to enter Serbia.

With Tunisia in the grip of an economic crisis, the club president stated that he could not pay the players.

The country serves as a major point of departure for ships carrying migrants to Europe.

President Kais Saied has rejected the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) $1.9 billion (£1.5 billion) rescue package because it includes spending cuts.
