Parliament is halting the approval process for ministers and deputy ministers nominated by President Akufo-Addo, as announced by Speaker Alban Bagbin, citing a legal challenge currently before the Supreme Court.
This decision comes after the presidency issued a directive to cease advancing the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Family Values for the president’s signature, citing ongoing legal proceedings at the Supreme Court.
Bagbin emphasized the importance of upholding legislative authority and democratic principles amidst such challenges, expressing concern over the erosion of foundational checks and balances.
He also noted the receipt of legal documentation related to an injunction motion filed by MP Dafeamekpor, seeking to restrain the Speaker from proceeding with the vetting and approval of the nominees until certain constitutional requirements are met.
In light of these legal proceedings, Bagbin declared Parliament’s inability to continue considering the President’s nominations until the Supreme Court makes a determination on the interlocutory injunction, reaffirming the commitment to uphold the rule of law.
