The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) have jointly announced a nationwide strike.
Among their grievances are the ongoing withholding of teachers’ salaries, unilateral changes to timetables without union consultation, and delays in distributing laptops to teachers.
Speaking to the press, GNAT’s National President, Isaac Owusu, stressed the importance of all teachers complying with the directive.
“The delayed distribution of laptops to teachers is troubling. The frequent changes to school calendars without consulting the unions disrupt the smooth functioning of the service. Additionally, the blocking of teachers’ salaries by the Office of the Special Prosecutor without following due procedures is a major concern.”
“Given the delays and unmet promises from the employer and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, as well as threats from our members, we stand with our teachers and declare a nationwide industrial action starting today, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to demand action on our grievances,” he affirmed.
The strike is a response to what they perceive as the government’s neglect in addressing their working conditions.
