Nigeria is an oil-rich country, but the new president will need to diversify the economy.
Oil production fell to its lowest level in 30 years in 2022.

The decrease of output has been blamed on oil theft and vandalism.
This, along with years of underinvestment and the age of the oil resources, means Nigeria is lagging behind other African oil-producing countries.

Furthermore, despite the country’s oil wealth, the shortage of energy in Nigeria has long been a source of dissatisfaction.
People who are connected to the grid cannot rely on it for a consistent supply.
According to World Bank data, the fraction of Nigerians with access to power has remained stable in recent years.
This has left a large number of people in the dark.
