John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his recent remarks regarding the 2024 general elections.
Mahama labeled the President’s comments as immature, asserting that it’s not within Akufo-Addo’s purview to determine his successor. Speaking in Damongo, Mahama emphasized that leadership is divinely appointed, not dictated by individuals.
“I want to urge the president, that the best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent, and credible election. I wish to remind him that it is God who makes rulers and he can never be the one to choose his successor, it is God who will choose his successor,” Mahama remarked during an event over the weekend marking the commencement of a new Jakpa Palace construction project.
While affirming the NDC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process, Mahama took aim at Akufo-Addo’s expressed readiness to oversee free, fair, and transparent elections. He reiterated the importance of divine selection in leadership succession.
Meanwhile, Akufo-Addo, speaking at an event in Wa last week, expressed his readiness to oversee a credible electoral process, promising to bid farewell to the community before the elections and introduce his chosen successor. He hinted at supporting his Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, as the next president under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket.
“Our country is known as the pacesetter for democratic governance across the entire continent of Africa. I want to assure you that this year, we are going to maintain that reputation. But I need your support and cooperation,” Akufo-Addo emphasized.
