Cristiano Ronaldo is poised to make Euro history as he secures a spot in Portugal’s 26-man squad for 2024, unveiled on Tuesday by coach Roberto Martinez.
The 39-year-old, five-time Ballon d’Or winner will mark his 11th major international tournament appearance, with his debut dating back to Euro 2004. This record-breaking sixth appearance at the men’s continental championship is a testament to his enduring talent and dedication to the sport. Despite facing injuries, Ronaldo has been an integral part of Portugal’s success, including their triumph in France in 2016.
Playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo holds the men’s world record for caps (206) and international goals (128), a testament to his unparalleled skill and longevity in the game.
During the qualifiers, Ronaldo showcased his prowess, contributing 10 goals in nine appearances, underscoring his importance to the team’s success.
Martinez praised Ronaldo’s exceptional performance, highlighting his invaluable contribution to the team’s offensive capabilities.
Despite his age, Ronaldo will not be the oldest player in the squad. Pepe, his former Real Madrid teammate, aged 41 and currently playing for Porto, has also been included for his leadership qualities and experience.
As Portugal gears up for Euro, they will face warm-up matches against Finland, Croatia, and Ireland before taking on the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Georgia in Group F.
Ronaldo will lead an attacking lineup comprising Rafael Leao, Joao Felix, Goncalo Ramos, Pedro Neto, and Francisco Conceicao. The midfield will be anchored by Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes, while the defensive lineup boasts talents like Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo.
With Ronaldo’s experience and leadership, Portugal aims to make a strong statement at Euro 2024.
