US President to Convene Security Meeting Amid Developments in Syria
President Joe Biden is set to meet with his national security advisors to discuss the rapidly unfolding events in Syria. This follows announcements by rebel forces claiming they have taken control of Damascus and ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
While global leaders have called for peace and a stable political transition, the U.S. has maintained a cautious approach. “The President will meet with his national security team this morning to receive an update on the situation in Syria,” stated Sean Savett, spokesperson for the National Security Council.
Rebels from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group reportedly mounted a swift offensive, toppling decades of Assad family rule. Their declaration of control over Damascus on Sunday sparked nationwide celebrations and reports of looting at the presidential residence.
The U.S. currently has a military presence in Syria and Iraq as part of efforts to counteract extremist groups. American forces have also carried out operations targeting factions linked to Iranian-backed militias, with Iran being a longstanding ally of Assad’s regime.
