For Muslims, Ramadan is a holy month in the calendar.
Most notably, it is associated with fasting – those who participate can eat only when the sun goes down.
‘Observing the fast during the holy month is extremely important as it is a time for improving one’s connection to God and is a time for self-reflection and self-control,’ said Sajad Mahmood, CEO of Muslim Charity Right.
‘Ramadan is a month that should serve as a spiritual training ground for the rest of the year. The goal of Ramadan is to help you establish good habits for the rest of the year so that you are spiritually and mentally stronger than you were before.’
But what about sexual relations?
Ramadan is observed by approximately 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide; therefore, are there any rules regarding intimate relationships during the Islamic holy month?
Here’s a list of what is and isn’t permitted.
Is sex allowed during Ramadan?
The reality is that many Muslims, regardless of marital status, will continue to engage in sexual activity during Ramadan.
What is and isn’t permitted is determined by fasting hours.
Sex is not permitted during the fast. When fasting ends for the day, those things considered haram during the day are permitted to resume – until fasting resumes the following day.
‘Hugging and kissing is allowed between spouses (during daylight hours), as long as it does not lead to more than that,’ Mahmood added.
‘This is done so that worshippers are not distracted during the day and have more time for worship and acts of kindness toward others.’
Though the majority of one’s time and energy should be spent on worship, Muslims are permitted to continue with their sexual lives.
Because Islam forbids extramarital sexual relations, non-marital sex should be avoided even more during this holy month.
Many practicing Muslims, on the other hand, will choose to have sex more freely; as with all religions, it is up to the individual to practice what resonates with them.
Ramadan has an impact on many aspects of a person’s life other than what they eat.
It has an impact on their sexual lives, social plans, hobbies, and spending habits.
Above all, the month is dedicated to worship.
