DR Congo has successfully advanced to the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following a goalless draw against Tanzania in Korhogo.
Unfortunately for the East Africans, their journey came to an end as they needed a victory to progress further in the tournament. DR Congo secured a spot in the last 16 by earning a point, finishing second in Group F behind Morocco, who claimed the top spot with a 1-0 win over Zambia. The Leopards’ next challenge will be a last-16 clash against Egypt, while Morocco is set to face South Africa.
The outcomes in Group F also paved the way for tournament hosts Ivory Coast to sneak into the second round as one of the four best third-placed teams. Despite parting ways with their manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, after finishing third in Group A, the Elephants will now face defending champions Senegal in the last 16 on Monday.
Leopards Dominate Stalemate In a lackluster encounter with few clear chances, the first-ever Nations Cup finals meeting between DR Congo and Tanzania failed to produce a breakthrough.
Supported by an enthusiastic and lively crowd, predominantly in favor of DR Congo, the Leopards had the better opportunities in the opening period. Gael Kakuta’s free-kick was aimed straight at Taifa Stars goalkeeper Aishi Manula, who also made a quick save to deny Fiston Mayele’s attempt on the edge of the penalty area.
Kakuta’s well-timed through ball found Yoane Wissa, but the Brentford forward missed the mark with his shot after cutting inside. Even though Meschack Elia, a second-half substitute, couldn’t help break the deadlock, Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta had the best chance for his side, firing over from a tight angle.
Chances were scarce in the second half, with Wissa creating two late opportunities. Despite his efforts, the match concluded without either side finding the back of the net, resulting in Tanzania achieving their first-ever Nations Cup clean sheet but finishing at the bottom of their group once again.
DR Congo, with two-time championship wins, has reached the knockout stage for the fifth time in their past six appearances at the finals. They now look forward to facing Egypt in San Pedro on Sunday at 20:00 GMT, where they’ll aim to capitalize on the absence of Mohamed Salah from the Egyptian side.
