Former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez, also known as “Chicharito,” has issued a public apology after facing intense backlash over comments many deemed disrespectful toward women.

The 37-year-old stirred controversy when he posted a video on Instagram suggesting that women were “erasing masculinity” and should focus more on domestic responsibilities. His remarks quickly drew widespread criticism from fans, fellow athletes, and public figures.

In the video, Hernandez said women should “embrace their nurturing side” and spoke about the home being “the most precious place for us men.” He also suggested that cleaning shouldn’t be viewed as oppression if men are expected to provide.

The response was swift. The Mexican Football Federation launched a review through its gender and diversity commission. His current club, Chivas, released a statement distancing itself from the comments and confirmed internal disciplinary measures had been taken. Even Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, weighed in, saying Hernandez might be skilled on the pitch but still has “a lot to learn” when it comes to women.

Facing mounting pressure, Hernandez took to Instagram again—this time to apologize. He thanked those who challenged him respectfully and said he never intended to offend or divide. He promised to reflect more deeply and communicate with greater care moving forward.

“As a father and a man, I want to act with humility and responsibility,” he wrote. “I’m listening, learning, and committed to doing better.”

Chicharito remains a legendary figure in Mexican football, holding the national record with 52 goals in 109 appearances. Over his career, he played for clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and West Ham, before returning home to play for Chivas.
