Richard Ofori, the 30-year-old Ghanaian goalkeeper, has arrived in South Africa to complete his move to AmaZulu. After his contract with Orlando Pirates ended in June 2024, Ofori spent the summer staying fit with personal training sessions.
Ofori has been a key figure in South African football since 2018, starting his journey with Maritzburg United. His standout performances there quickly marked him as one of the league’s top goalkeepers. This earned him a move to Orlando Pirates, one of the country’s most prestigious clubs.
During his time with the Buccaneers, Ofori played a crucial role in their success, most notably in their MTN 8 Cup win. He was the starting goalkeeper in the final, helping secure a 2-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic, ending a six-year trophy drought for the team.
With over 100 appearances for both Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates, Ofori brings a wealth of experience to AmaZulu. The club, looking to improve on their 11th-place finish last season, has set its sights on breaking into the top eight, which would qualify them for the MTN 8 competition.
In addition to his club experience, Ofori has earned 33 caps for the Ghanaian national team, with his latest appearance coming during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations against Mozambique. He hopes to use his international experience to help elevate AmaZulu’s performance.
AmaZulu has ambitions to return to the form of their 2021/22 season when they finished as MTN 8 runners-up and competed in the CAF Champions League group stages. Ofori’s arrival is a clear sign that the club is aiming high for the upcoming season, with the goalkeeper expected to play a key role in their push for success.
