Spanish football legend Jordi Alba has announced that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current MLS season with Inter Miami, marking the close of an extraordinary career that spanned nearly two decades.
The 36-year-old defender shared the heartfelt news on social media, describing his decision as one made with peace and gratitude.
“The time has come to close a momentous chapter in my life. I’ve decided to end my career as a professional footballer at the end of this season. I do so with conviction, fulfilment, and happiness,” Alba wrote.
He went on to express deep appreciation to the clubs and fans who shaped his journey.
“To FC Barcelona, the club of my life, the one that raised me, gave me everything, and allowed me to live more than a decade of unforgettable success — thank you. To the Spanish national team, I’m proud to have worn this jersey and to be part of its history. And to Inter Miami, thank you for welcoming me with open arms and letting me enjoy this final stage of my career.”
Alba also penned a touching note to his family and supporters.
“Thank you to all the fans for your love — you taught me that the jersey isn’t just worn, it’s felt. To my parents and brother, who stood by me from the start, this dream is yours too. I love you deeply.”
A graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Alba became one of the finest left-backs of his generation. Known for his blistering pace and understanding with Lionel Messi, he helped redefine the modern full-back role.
After starting at Valencia, Alba returned to Barcelona in 2012, where he forged a legendary partnership with Messi that thrilled fans across the world. During his 11 years at Camp Nou, he won nearly every major trophy available — including six La Liga titles, five Copa del Reys, a Champions League, and numerous international honors.
On the world stage, he represented Spain 93 times, lifting the Euro 2012 title and the UEFA Nations League, cementing his place in the country’s football history.
Joining Inter Miami in 2023, Alba showed he still had plenty to offer. Alongside former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez, he brought flair and experience to the MLS, helping the club win the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield.
As he prepares to retire, Alba remains focused on one last mission — guiding Inter Miami toward the MLS Cup, closing his career exactly as he lived it: with passion, pride, and purpose.
