Protests Against High Cost of Living Emerge in Kenya.

Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and other major towns have witnessed a significant police presence in anticipation of opposition supporters gathering for demonstrations against the soaring cost of living. Reports indicate protests occurring in various locations, including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, where police have employed tear gas to disperse crowds. Local media have also highlighted instances of vandalism against businesses in Kisumu during the protests.

Confrontations between police and demonstrators have been observed in multiple parts of Nairobi, leading to the blockage of a busy highway earlier in the day. Opposition leader Raila Odinga is scheduled to address a prominent political rally in the capital, where it is expected that he will announce the resumption of weekly nationwide protests.

While authorities have permitted the rally to proceed, caution has been urged to prevent protesters from entering Nairobi’s city center. Mr. Odinga is anticipated to launch a signature campaign aimed at garnering support for his efforts to compel the government to reduce prices of essential commodities like petrol.

These protests come on the heels of President William Ruto’s controversial signing of tax increases, including one on fuel, into law. The demonstration serves as a platform for citizens to voice their concerns over the high cost of living and call for necessary changes.
