Missy Elliott and A Tribe Called Quest have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

It was announced today that Missy Elliott and A Tribe Called Quest are among the nominees for the Class of 2023. They join George Michael, Kate Bush, the White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, the Spinners, and Warren Zevon on a prestigious list.

This is A Tribe Called Quest’s second nomination. The hip-hop group consists of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White, and the late Phife Dawg, who died in 2016.

Missy Elliott, who is nominated in her first year of eligibility, is the first female rapper to be nominated.

“I’ve cried my eyes out,” the “Get Ur Freak On” MC tweeted. “I’ve always dreamed big, but to be nominated for this is bigger than I could have imagined, and I am so grateful to @rockhall and all my fans who helped me get here please vote.”

She also recognized the importance of the nomination. “This is so important for us women in hip-hop because no female rapper has ever been nominated, and hopefully this nomination will open the door,” she added.

The top vote-getters will be announced in May and inducted into the Hall of Fame in the fall. Each nominee’s first single or album had to have been released in 1998 or earlier to be eligible for this year’s ballot.

“This extraordinary list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These artists have created their own sounds that have influenced generations of others who have followed in their footsteps.”

Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. He is the only hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock Hall, joining Run-D.M.C., N.W.A., JAY-Z, LL Cool J, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
