Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed any notion of an extended tenure at the Premier League club with a laugh when asked if he would stay “forever.”
Guardiola, who is now the longest-serving Premier League manager following Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool, has a contract that runs until June 30, 2025. Despite his tremendous success, including winning the treble (Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup) in the 2022-2023 season and securing his fourth consecutive Premier League title, there are strong indications that he does not plan to extend his contract beyond its current term.
In a press conference following an unexpected 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup final, a reporter inquired about the possibility of Guardiola remaining at Manchester City indefinitely. He responded with a laugh, “Forever?! [laughs],” suggesting that he isn’t considering a long-term stay at the club.
Guardiola also mentioned that the future of several players would be decided over the summer. Key players such as Kevin De Bruyne, who is attracting interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, Bernardo Silva, who is linked with FC Barcelona, and goalkeeper Ederson, are among those who could potentially leave the club.
“Next season, we’ll have to go step by step and see what happens, what squad we will have. We have to start working and then see,” Guardiola stated. “I know some players have to decide whether they stay with us, some players might come. I’m really pleased with the team, how they’ve behaved all season. I could not say differently.”
As City prepares for the upcoming season, Guardiola’s remarks underscore the fluid nature of football, with potential changes in both the squad and his own future at the club.
