Liverpool will return to the pitch this Sunday with heavy hearts as they pay tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, following their tragic passing in a car accident earlier this month.

The Portuguese forward, just 27, and his brother lost their lives in a fatal crash in northern Spain on July 3—only days after Jota had celebrated his wedding with longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The devastating accident occurred when the Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off the road and burst into flames, killing both men instantly.

As the Reds gear up for their pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale Stadium, the day will serve as much more than a warm-up—it will be a moment of reflection, remembrance, and collective mourning.

Before kickoff, Liverpool has confirmed that “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will echo through the stadium, followed by a solemn minute of silence. Players from both teams will wear black armbands, while tributes will light up the stadium’s big screens and pitchside displays. Preston North End will also lay a wreath in front of the away stand as a mark of respect.

Liverpool had postponed their return to training until Tuesday, allowing players and staff time to process the loss. Manager Arne Slot, captain Virgil van Dijk, and other first-team members attended Jota’s funeral last weekend to support his grieving family.

Jota, a father of three, joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite. Known for his clinical finishing, tireless energy, and ability to play across the front line, he made a lasting impact in over 90 appearances for the club.

Though Sunday’s match is only a pre-season fixture, it will carry the weight of remembrance for a life and career cut painfully short. As fans gather, both in the stands and around the world, the moment will be about more than football—it will be a celebration of Jota’s legacy, passion, and the love he inspired on and off the field.
