Following her announcement as the headliner for Made in America 2023, SZA took to Twitter to express her frustrations. The TDE artist voiced her strong disapproval of the ongoing online targeting and harassment faced by Lizzo. In a series of tweets, the “Kill Bill” singer called out trolls and expressed her disappointment in the absence of supporters during these attacks.

SZA wondered aloud about the whereabouts of the self-proclaimed defenders of justice and vocal critics who are usually quick to engage in online debates. She questioned why they seemed to be absent when someone like Lizzo, who genuinely needed support, was being targeted. SZA pondered whether these individuals truly knew how to uplift and stand up for others or if their intention was solely to tear them down.

In a Twitter exchange, SZA shared her thoughts in response to a user’s question about whether people defend the artist on the platform. SZA strongly disagreed and expressed her frustration, stating, “Definitely not enough. Considering the amount of free love, encouragement, and positivity she embodies and shares on a daily basis across all apps? The numbers just don’t add up.”

Expressing her concern for the way Lizzo is treated online, SZA joins a growing number of individuals who are becoming increasingly unsettled. Concluding her series of tweets, SZA makes a heartfelt plea for kindness, emphasizing the importance of practicing empathy and choosing to remain silent instead of contributing to the negativity. She states, “Let’s all strive for kindness and refrain from unnecessary negativity because honestly, the world is already ugly enough. Why add to it?”

In light of Lizzo’s own admission regarding the challenges she faces with body-shaming comments, these remarks from SZA carry additional weight. Lizzo had previously shared her frustration on Twitter, stating, “Sometimes, I feel so close to giving up on everyone and everything and escaping to a peaceful farm with my loved ones…” Consequently, she has since made her Twitter account private, limiting her interactions on the platform. However, her earlier series of tweets were captured by Pop Base.

SZA and Lizzo collaborated on the remix of “Special” in February. The original track was featured on Lizzo’s fourth studio album, titled “Special,” which was released in 2022 and followed by successful records like “Grrrls” and “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready).” Lizzo’s album was also showcased at the 2023 Grammy Awards, where she received the prestigious Record of the Year award for her hit single “About Damn Time.”
