The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has highlighted that the presidential villa has an outstanding electricity bill totaling N923.87 million.
To prevent disconnection at the nation’s seat of power, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the settlement of Aso Rock’s electricity bill.
In a public notice titled ‘Notice of Disconnection’ released on Monday, the AEDC specified that the presidential villa, along with 86 government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), collectively owe N47.1 billion in electricity debts. They have been given a 10-day notice to clear their outstanding balances or face disconnection.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed in a statement on Tuesday that Tinubu intervened following a reconciliation of accounts between the State House and the AEDC.
“Onanuga stated that after the account reconciliation between the State House Management and AEDC, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the immediate settlement of the outstanding electricity bill owed to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company,” the statement highlighted.
The outstanding bill, initially cited by the AEDC at N923 million in a published advertorial, was clarified to be N342,352,217.46 in a letter from the AEDC to the State House Permanent Secretary dated February 14, 2024.
With the resolution of discrepancies between both parties, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has assured that the debt will be cleared before the week concludes.
Onanuga further emphasized that the Chief of Staff encouraged other MDAs to reconcile their accounts with the AEDC and settle their electricity bills promptly.
