Two women are suing Apple because they claim the company’s AirTag monitoring devices make it simpler for former partners and other stalkers to locate their victims.

Hughes et al v. Apple Inc., a proposed class-action lawsuit filed on Monday in federal court in San Francisco, alleges that since the tech giant released what it dubbed the “stalker proof” device in April 2021, AirTag has failed to shield users from unwanted trafficking.

Lauren Hughes said that her boyfriend found her after hiding an AirTag in the wheel well of her car. The other plaintiff claimed that after placing an AirTag in their child’s backpack, her divorced husband tracked her.

Law enforcement has reported that some people utilize the $29 AirTags for illegal or malevolent purposes, despite the fact that they are intended to help people retrieve missing objects.

The plaintiffs are American owners of iOS or Android-based accessories who were tracked by AirTag or are “at risk” of being stalked as a result of the company’s alleged negligence. The women claimed AirTags had been linked to killings from Ohio and Indiana earlier in the year.

The AirTags producer, based in California, confirmed that “bad actors” had attempted to abuse the system and released an update in February.
