The president of Eritrea has accused Sudan’s two warring generals of hijacking the 2019 revolution, claiming that the country could only have one army.
According to Isaias Afwerki, the “tragic and deplorable conflict” must end immediately, and the best way forward is for the regional grouping Igad to resolve the crisis.
While the current situation in Sudan is of global concern, Mr. Isaias believes that Igad’s initiative will assist Sudanese people in transitioning to what they had hoped for after long-time leader Omar al-Bashir was deposed four years ago.
Eritrea, he said, was willing to help in this regard.
Over 100,000 people have already fled Sudan’s fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Another 334,000 people have been internally displaced within Sudan.
President Isaias said his country’s sea, land, and airspace were open to Sudanese and others affected by the conflict, but he refused to allow refugee camps to be established in Eritrea.
