As the government grapples with a rising wage bill, the Mozambican cabinet has approved a bill proposing pay cuts for ministers, deputy ministers, state secretaries, and MPs.
Finance and Economy Minister Max Tonela said on Thursday that the proposal was also intended to address concerns about the salaries of provincial assembly members, which he said violated the principles of fair pay.
Some of their salaries, according to Mr. Tonela, were significantly higher than those of other executives and specialized professionals.
He did not specify the size of the proposed cuts.
The pay cuts will not affect public employees whose salaries were adjusted under the Unified Pay Scale (TSU) approved this year.
The move comes nearly two weeks after the International Monetary Fund urged the government to cut public wage spending.
Before becoming law, the wage bill will be introduced in parliament for debate.
