Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, urged on Thursday for an immediate cessation of hostilities along the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, citing the escalating risk of a broader conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting the northern border area following eight months of conflict with Hamas resulting in significant damage to Gaza, issued a warning on Wednesday. He stated that Israel was “prepared for a very intense operation” along the border.
The recent escalation in artillery exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel coincides with Israel’s conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Both Hezbollah and Hamas are supported by Iran and maintain a strategic alliance.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasized the urgency of halting the ongoing exchanges of fire across the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon. He stressed that these exchanges could escalate into a broader conflict with severe consequences for the entire region.
