Stephanie Dabney, one of the greatest ballerinas in America, has died. When she joined the company in 1975 at the age of 16, Stephanie was an apprentice at first before becoming a full company member six months later. Stephanie was a principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem.
She performed in almost all of the company’s ballets, including Agon, Le Corsaire, and Serenade, among many others. She is best recognized, though, for her portrayal of the Firebird in the highly regarded Firebird production by Dance Theatre of Harlem, which was choreographed by John Taras. She became one of the most renowned Firebirds of all time because of her electrifying performances as the Firebird before audiences worldwide.
She was a true artist who changed the way we viewed ballet and served as an example for future generations of dancers. We are honored to have contributed to the legacy she leaves behind. Stephanie will be missed.
