Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, has obtained an overwhelming majority of nominations from the over 4,000 branches of the governing African National Congress (ANC) party, positioning him for potential re-election at the party’s internal leadership convention later this month.
After former President Jacob Zuma was kicked out of the ANC leadership position in 2017, Mr. Ramaphosa won the party’s leadership election on a platform that included a commitment to combat corruption.
Former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who earned 916 nominations, will fight Mr. Ramaphosa, who received 2,037 nominations.
At the height of the Covid-19 outbreak in the nation, Mr. Mkhize resigned from the administration in response to corruption claims. In light of an alleged theft of significant amounts of foreign currency from his private farm, President Ramaphosa is currently receiving pressure from inside his own party.
His declared assets did not include the cash that was stolen.
The elective conference of the ANC is scheduled to take place from December 15 to 20.
