The streaming service provider has announced plans to change the way users access their services. The changes have the potential to prevent millions of people from watching their favorite TV shows and movies.
After the streaming giant changes its rules, viewers will soon be unable to share their passwords with friends. People who have been tuning in using other people’s logins will now have to create their own accounts as part of the massive change.
The company has been testing the new feature in order to prevent users from sharing their login information with friends and family.
Netflix has announced a new “paid sharing” option that will allow multiple profiles per account while costing less than a full subscription.
“Later in Q1, we expect to begin rolling out paid sharing more broadly,” the company stated in its earnings report, which was released earlier this week.
“Today’s widespread account sharing (100 million or more households) jeopardizes our long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix while also growing our business.”
However, there is no word on when the feature will be available.
“We’ve worked hard to build additional new features that improve the Netflix experience, such as the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and transfer a profile to a new account,” Netflix added.
“As we roll out paid sharing, members in many countries will be able to pay an additional fee if they want to share Netflix with people they don’t live with.”
