Laboratory analyses have confirmed that large amounts of fresh water from rivers flowing into the sea killed fish on Mozambique beaches earlier this month.
On February 10, the BBC reported that dead fish were washing up on Maputo Bay, causing concern among authorities.
Fisheries Minister Lidia Cardoso stated on Wednesday that the findings revealed that the main cause was a change in climatic conditions.
She also denied that the fish died as a result of chemical poisoning.
“It had nothing to do with chemical components. The discharge from the rivers caused by the floods affected the fish, which are extremely sensitive to stress – and because the salinity level in the water dropped, the fish died,” she explained.
