According to security sources in Burkina Faso, 14 people were killed by jihadist insurgents near the northern city of Kaya, including four soldiers.
The attack occurred during the visit of interim leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
It was aimed at a unit of soldiers and defense volunteers tasked with defending repairs to water supply facilities in Zorkoum.
The withdrawal of French forces from Burkina Faso and Mali, and their replacement with Wagner Group mercenaries from Russia, has done little to stem the tide of jihadi violence.
