The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has taken action to ensure MultiChoice Nigeria Limited complies with its interim order, restraining the company from increasing DSTV tariffs.
Chairman Saratu Shafii directed that the interim order be visibly displayed at MultiChoice’s corporate headquarters, branch addresses nationwide, known email address, and social media platforms. This move aims to ensure transparency and accessibility of the order to the public.
The interim order, prompted by a complaint from Abuja-based lawyer Festus Onifade, addresses concerns over MultiChoice’s planned tariff increase on its DStv and Gotv packages effective May 1.
Onifade sought an interim injunction to halt the impending price hike pending the tribunal’s decision on the matter. The tribunal responded by issuing the interim order, restraining MultiChoice from implementing the tariff increase until further notice.
Despite attempts to serve MultiChoice with the order, difficulties arose when staff at the Abuja office reportedly refused to accept the documents. Consequently, the tribunal issued an order of substituted service, mandating that the order be conspicuously displayed at MultiChoice’s locations nationwide and communicated through various channels, including email, social media, and the CCPT communication outlet.
This proactive measure underscores the tribunal’s commitment to upholding consumer rights and ensuring fair business practices in the telecommunications industry.
