Babachir Lawal criticized Tinubu for not offering alternatives to Nigerians, similar to Obasanjo and Abacha, when they eliminated fuel subsidy.
The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, described Nigeria’s current economic state as a result of President Bola Tinubu’s “hasty decisions.”
In an interview with The Cable, Lawal expressed dismay over the president’s apparent arrogance and insensitivity in removing fuel subsidy without prior consultation.
According to Lawal, Tinubu should have taken time to establish his cabinet and engage in discussions with them before making the decision to remove fuel subsidy.
Lawal emphasized the importance of careful consideration and consultation, stating that Tinubu’s abrupt decision led to immediate consequences upon assuming office. He believed Tinubu should have formed a cabinet, gathered relevant individuals, and deliberated extensively before taking such a significant step.
Lawal also criticized Tinubu for not presenting alternative measures for Nigerians, unlike his predecessors who implemented initiatives like the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) by Abacha and the SURE-P program by Obasanjo.
He highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives, which focused on social development, healthcare, education, and infrastructure projects.
Lawal questioned Tinubu’s approach, expressing confusion over his perceived arrogance in implementing policies without considering the precedents set by previous leaders.
In Lawal’s view, the economic challenges facing Nigeria stem from Tinubu’s rushed decisions regarding fuel subsidy removal.
