Sheeran listed other difficult challenges he faced last year in his post. “My best friend Jamal, who was like a brother to me, died unexpectedly,” he wrote. According to BBC News, Jamal Edwards is a British entrepreneur who is credited with giving Sheeran his big break through his media company SBTV. He died at the age of 31 from a “sudden illness,” according to his family, in February 2022.
“I found myself in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter,” Sheeran said, referring to a lawsuit over his 2017 song “Shape of You,” in which Sheeran was accused of plagiarizing the song from an artist named Sami Switch. Sheeran won the case in April 2022.
“I was in a downward spiral of fear, depression, and anxiety. I felt as if I were drowning, my head beneath the surface, looking up but unable to break through for air “He maintained his position.
Sheeran stated that he had been working on “Subtract” for a decade, but the events of 2022 altered his life, mental health, and perspective on music and art. So, about a week ago, he replaced the entire album with his “deepest darkest thoughts.”
He stated that writing songs is his therapy and that he “just wrote whatever tumbled out” while working on this album. “For the first time, I’m not attempting to create an album that people will enjoy; instead, I’m simply releasing something that is honest and true to where I am in my adult life,” he wrote.
According to BBC News, the album will be released on May 5. “Subtract” follows a string of math-themed albums, including “Plus,” “Multiply,” “Divide,” and “Equals.”
