The Senate confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Mr. Solomon Arase as Chairman of the Police Service Commission in plenary on Wednesday (PSC).
Arase’s confirmation followed the Committee on Police Affairs’ review of a report.
Sen.Jika Halliru (APC-Bauchi), Chairman of the Committee, presented the report.
Haillu stated that Arases’ nomination was in accordance with Section 154, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of 1999.
Sections two A and B of the Police Service Commission Establishment Act 2001, he claims, also require the President to appoint Nigerians of proven integrity to the PSC.
He stated that the committee’s findings showed that Arase meets the necessary legal requirements and is affirmed by the committee to be the proper person to be appointed as Chairman of the PSC.
He stated that the committee was pleased and impressed with how competently the nominee answered all questions posed to him.
Hilliru stated that given Arase’s qualifications and relevant experience over the years, the committee recommends that the Senate confirm his appointment as Chairman of the PSC.
Sen. Ajayi Borofice,(APC-Ondo), who made the glowing remark on the robust academic profile and career of the nominee, described his nomination as a “round peg in a round whole”.
He stated that his eventual appointment would benefit the PSC because he has served in various capacities in the Nigerian police service.
Sen. Mathew Urhoghide (PDP-Edo) praised the committee for screening the nominee and President Muhammadu Buhari for nominating Arase.
Given the nominee’s pedigree for excellence, he urged the Senate to confirm him as soon as possible.
