The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, has been excused by Parliament for the steps being taken to address the country’s shortage of childhood vaccines.
The House Business Committee had scheduled him to address the House on the vaccine shortage.
Several parts of the country have experienced vaccine shortages in recent months, despite claims by the National Health Insurance Authority that over GH70 million has been set aside for vaccine procurement.
The worrying situation has piqued the interest of Nana Ayew Afriyie, Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, who sees the need to summon the Minister of Health and other agency heads to an emergency meeting on Tuesday, February 28.
The Health Minister, who was scheduled to appear in the House on February 28, 2023, did not appear, enraging the Minority.
Meanwhile, the Paediatric Society of Ghana has revealed that due to a lack of essential vaccines, over 500 cases of measles have been recorded in the country.
Dr. Hilda Boye, the newly elected President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, stated that the situation is extremely concerning because the vaccines’ delayed arrival could potentially worsen the disease.
“As we speak, we are looking at about 500 suspected cases of measles. So we’re concerned because we’re just sitting and watching, and it’s getting worse by the day, which is to be expected given that it’s an infectious disease, and we really shouldn’t have come here in the first place.
