We knew it was coming, and we knew it was coming soon: sharing Netflix passwords with people outside your household is about to get a lot more difficult. But, until now, we had no idea how Netflix intends to prevent people from sharing their passwords.
Here’s how it will work.
“Connect to Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days to ensure uninterrupted Netflix access. This creates a trusted device that allows you to watch Netflix even when you are not in your primary location “In an updated Help Center document, the company stated.
If you’re on the road, you can watch Netflix by logging into your account. However, if you’re gone for an “extended period of time” — presumably longer than 31 days — Netflix says “your device may be blocked from watching Netflix.” The solution is to request a “temporary access code to continue watching,” according to Netflix.
There’s a caveat to this. The updated help document(Opens in a new tab), spotted by The Streamable(Opens in a new tab), doesn’t appear to be online anymore, though it is accessible via Wayback Machine(Opens in a new tab), which keeps old snapshots of websites on the internet. As a result, it’s possible that Netflix will change some details before enforcing the Wi-Fi connection rule.
