Nigerian doctors have expressed concern about the government’s failure to impose restrictions on visitors from China following the resurgence of Covid-19 in the Asian country, according to the privately owned The Punch website.
China has seen an increase in cases since abandoning its strict Covid-19 measures.
The medics claimed that the country lacked adequate personnel to deal with another pandemic due to the mass emigration of health workers to other countries.
“We need to act now because we don’t even have enough doctors to handle the current challenges in the health sector,” said National Association of Resident Doctors president Dr. Emeka Orji, according to the website.
To prevent a new outbreak of the virus in Nigeria, those arriving from China must have a negative Covid-19 test or be screened, according to Prof Oladapo Ashiru, president of the Academy of Medicine Specialities of Nigeria.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, on the other hand, maintains that travel restrictions have little or no effect on preventing the virus’s global and national spread.
Ghana recently announced that visitors entering the country from China will be subjected to a mandatory Covid-19 test upon arrival.
