Peter Obi, a presidential candidate in Nigeria, has put his campaigning on hold to visit those affected by recent floods that have forced 1.3 million people from their homes and ruined more than 200,000. The worst flooding the country of West Africa has experienced in ten years has claimed more than 600 lives.
The candidate for the Labour Party advised his opponents, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, to halt their own campaigns as well.
After meeting the governor of Benue state, he told journalists, “I personally halted and told my team no more campaign, until we are able to visit some of the places, at least sympathize with those suffering through issues.”
Mr. Obi promised to travel to other states.
He challenged his rivals, saying, “If we can purchase our [nomination]forms for millions of [local currency]Naira, we should have some small thing to go, now that people are suffering, and at least show compassion with them, and then we can continue.”
