A Swiss appeals court upheld a 20-year prison sentence against a former Liberian warlord convicted of rape, murder, and cannibalism.
According to his lawyers, Alieu Kosiah was also found guilty of the additional charge of crimes against humanity, which prosecutors had added.
In 2021, the former rebel commander was found guilty of war crimes.
The case was the first of its kind in Switzerland or anywhere else for atrocities committed during Liberia’s multiple civil wars from 1989 to 2003.
During the conflict, hundreds of thousands of people were killed or mutilated.
