Tundu Lissu, Tanzania’s former presidential candidate, is set to return home from exile in Belgium on Wednesday. After the government recently lifted a ban on political rallies, the opposition leader returns home and is expected to address supporters later in the afternoon.
Former President John Magufuli imposed the ban in 2016, allowing only elected politicians to hold rallies in their respective constituencies. Mr. Lissu was shot 16 times in an assassination attempt in the country’s capital, Dodoma, in 2017, and has spent the majority of his time since in Belgium.
He then returned for a few months in 2020 to run against Mr. Magufuli in a presidential election in which he received only 13% of the vote. His Chadema party rejected the result, citing widespread irregularities.
