Kenyan riot police used tear gas on residents of Nairobi’s largest slum to prevent them from marching to the city center for planned opposition protests.
According to the BBC’s Ferdinand Omondi, there is a large police presence in the city, and access to roads leading to the president’s official residence is restricted.
Some parents have chosen to keep their children home from school on the day after the mid-term break.
On Twitter, opposition politicians claimed that their phones had been disabled without providing evidence.
Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, has called for nationwide protests against President William Ruto and his government over what he calls a rigged election and the high cost of living.
