A poultry association has warned that South Africa may face severe chicken shortages as a result of the power outage, which is affecting chicken slaughtering. According to the South African Poultry Association (Sapa), the number of chickens slaughtered has had to be reduced due to abattoirs being unable to keep up due to power outages.
Sapa, according to local media, has also had to cull 10 million chicks in recent weeks.
Some franchises, such as KFC, are already feeling the effects, and the situation is expected to worsen. It comes amid warnings that the problem could become long-term, affecting retail and wholesale markets.
