A man who attacked Comoros President Azali Assoumani with a knife and caused him minor injuries has been found dead in his prison cell, according to the national prosecutor’s office. The announcement came just a day after the incident.
Ali Mohamed Djounaid, the national prosecutor, shared that the man had been isolated in a cell to calm down following his arrest. Early this morning, investigators discovered his lifeless body. A doctor confirmed the death, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause.
Government spokesperson Fatima Ahamada reported that President Assoumani, who is 65, is now at home with his family and in good health. The attack occurred during a funeral for a prominent religious figure.
Witnesses revealed that while the knife did injure the president’s hand, another mourner intervened to stop the attacker.
