Nigerian singer Jaywon recently expressed his admiration for Ayra Starr, calling her one of Africa’s top female vocalists. His comments came in response to Ayra Starr’s absence from the 67th Grammy Awards nominee list, which sparked conversation among fans.
Shortly after the nominees were announced, Jaywon shared a photo of himself holding two Grammy awards. Many saw this as a subtle dig at Starr, given their ongoing online tension. The post drew criticism, with fans accusing him of shading his colleague.
Responding to the backlash, Jaywon clarified his respect for Ayra Starr and apologized. He posted on Instagram, saying, “Please tell Ayra Starr I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for the Grammys this year. I’m a big fan of her music, and I truly believe she’s one of Africa’s best female vocalists.”
He continued, “Here, we uplift others, not just for today, but for the future. Ola Inu Kan.”
Notably, Jaywon is a voting member of the Recording Academy, the body responsible for the Grammys.
