Indonesian President-Elect Prabowo Subianto Undergoes Surgery but Stays Active
Indonesian president-elect Prabowo Subianto recently had leg surgery but remains dedicated to his duties, according to his spokesperson.
Health Update
The defense minister and former general, who had long struggled with a limp from parachuting accidents, had surgery on his left leg at the National Defence Central Hospital in Jakarta. While the details of the procedure are undisclosed, Prabowo described it as “full of risks” on social media.
Resuming Duties
Despite the surgery, Prabowo has resumed his responsibilities as defense minister. He even attended an anniversary celebration for Indonesian police on Monday. “Thank God, he is now very fit. [His leg] has healed and is much better now,” said his spokesperson, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak.
Presidential Visit
Photos shared on Instagram showed President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, visiting Prabowo in the hospital. Prabowo, dressed in a bathrobe, expressed gratitude for the visit and acknowledged the risks involved in his surgery.
Controversial Background and Future Plans
Prabowo, set to succeed Jokowi in October, has faced controversy over past human rights abuse allegations related to the disappearance of democracy activists during the late 1990s. Despite this, he won the election by pledging to continue Jokowi’s agenda of strong economic development and choosing the president’s eldest son, Gibran, as his vice president.
