Benjamin Netanyahu has come under fire from his rivals for allegedly trampling on Israeli democracy
On Tuesday, US Vice President Joe Biden warned Israel that it “cannot continue” to push for the highly contentious judicial reforms that are currently on hold and have caused months of turmoil and anger among Western allies.
“I’m very concerned, like many strong supporters of Israel… They cannot continue down this road, and I’ve sort of made that clear,” Biden told reporters during a visit to North Carolina, according to AFP.
“Hopefully, the prime minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) will act in such a way that he will try to work out some genuine compromise,” Biden said, adding that he was not considering inviting Netanyahu to the White House anytime soon.
Upon his return to Washington, Biden expressed his concern about the situation in Israel, where Netanyahu has been chastised by his opponents for allegedly trampling on Israeli democracy in order to increase his own power.
Biden frequently used the phrase “inflection point” to describe the threat to democracies around the world. “I’m not sure if they’re at a tipping point, but I think they’re in a tough spot and need to figure it out.”
He demanded that the contentious judicial law be repealed, telling reporters that he hoped they would abandon it.
