Kenyan Chef Takes on New Cooking Marathon Challenge for Guinness World Record.
Maliha Mohammed, a Kenyan chef known for her previous attempts at setting world records for nonstop cooking, is once again pushing her limits. This time, she aims to establish a new 90-hour record for continuous home cooking, and she’s sharing the challenge through her TikTok page.
As of Monday morning in Kenya, Mohammed had already surpassed the existing record of 68 hours, 30 minutes, and one second, set in 2018 by American chef Rickey Lumpkin II, according to Guinness World Records.
Her pursuit of this record differs from a previous attempt by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci earlier in the year. Mohammed clarified on her YouTube page, “I will be cooking nonstop for the longest home kitchen cooking marathon. That is a different title from what Chef Hilda was cooking.”
Responding to criticism that she was imitating Baci’s effort, Mohammed explained that she applied for her record attempt back in December 2022. Achieving a Guinness record necessitates submitting an application and receiving approval from the organization for the record to be recognized.
Mohammed has taken on cooking marathons before. In 2018, she aimed to set a world record by cooking for 72 hours. In 2019, she extended her challenge to a 75-hour cooking marathon. However, Guinness recognized Indian chef Lata London’s feat of completing a cooking marathon lasting 87 hours and 45 minutes that same year.
In her current endeavor, Mohammed is preparing a diverse range of dishes, including 320 Swahili, Kenyan, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and international recipes.
